For Dylan...one day

You once were a little boy
who loved
fire engines
and
garbage trucks
equally well.
And we walked miles
and miles
together
and every garbage man
we passed
would smile and wave
or honk their horn
at us.
They knew us,
Grandma
and her little
truck-loving buddy.
Fire trucks would inspire you
to try and
climb
out of your stroller
as you pointed and squealed
and made
siren sounds.
I hope you aspire to be a fireman
but a garbage man
too
is fine with me.
Every morning you line up
Bert & Ernie
and Chloe Dog
and Cookie Monster,
Elmo
and
Curious George
along the windowsill
looking outside.
And Monday when the garbage man
comes in the dark,
your little face
is plastered against
the glass
as you peer raptly
at the flashing lights
and clanging cans
and point,
making sure your buddies in the window
see them, too.
Me...I stand in the shadows
and watch my darling boy.
And I savor
the sight.
I am already saying
goodbye
to the moment.

What a sweet poem! Only a grandma recognizes that the moments are fleeting.

Mom!!! You made me cry. You are so lucky to have this talent. *sigh*

Thank you for such a beautiful poem. Dylan is so blessed to have you as his Grandma...just as I'm blessed to have you for a mother. I love you!

The good moments go by so quickly don't they? But you are one fortunate grandma to get to see so many!!

Such a sweet poem, it sounds like my youngest grandson exactly.

Made me cry Kris....Mitchell has just started work and in between school and his girlfriends place I rarely get to see him "online". I remember looking at him and thinking much the same thing. It's heart breaking, especially if you sit and dwell on it all day long like I did today.
What is nice though is that I knew it would come one day and I have been preparing myself for the past 16 years, I would be crying a whole lot more if I hadn't.

Beautiful !!!

It must be such a blessing to be able to see Dylan this way. I think of my parents and how little they know about my kids because they just don't get to see them much. My grandparents didn't know me that well either...I hope Dylan knows someday how special it is to have a grandma and grandpa that know him as well as his mom & dad!

Dylan is a VERY blessed little boy to have a grandma that not only sees and recognizes these moments, but has the gift to record them in such a heartfelt way.
